Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

How to stay active when your gym is closed

March 19, 2020

If you’re like me the gym is my second home and quite frankly one of the only things that was keeping me sane while I felt like the world was shutting down around me. And then they closed that too.  After my initial mourning period, I realized that just because the world was stopping my fitness progress didn’t have to. Here is a list of some of the things you can do around your house and community while practicing social distancing and maintaining your fitness.

Go for walks/runs outside

You don’t need a treadmill or stair-master to do cardio, especially now that the weather is getting nicer!  Take advantage of the longer days and warming temperatures to go outside for your cardio. Run, walk, bike, roller blade, there are so many different options and you can do it alone or with your quarantine buddy!

Try an at home workout

Every fitness instagrammer/youtuber and their grandmother has posted at least one video for an at home workout you can do with little to no equipment.  If Classic Physique Mr. Olympia, Chris Bumstead, can get in a decent workout at home I’m sure you can find things around your house that are heavy enough to do one too.

Some Instagram profiles to check out for at home workout ideas are @cbum  @victoriadariano and @regangrimes. Some gyms like Orange Theory Fitness have also been posting at home workouts on their Instagram.

Join an online class

Always wanted to try yoga but never had the opportunity to go to a real class? Is yoga part of your fitness regime and you’re missing it like crazy?  Power Yoga Canada has been live streaming classes every day at 6 a.m., 9:30 a.m., noon, 4:30 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Check out their Facebook and Instagram pages for more information!

If you had a gym membership that has been put on hold, check to see if your gym has any online services available! Goodlife is offering LesMills On Demand for free for anyone who has a membership with them.

Take your fur baby to the park or for a walk at your local conservation area

WHO let the dogs out! It’s been confirmed that dogs can neither transmit nor carry the virus so take your adorable fur baby for a nice long walk! Oshawa and the Durham Region have so many nice conservation areas that you can take your dog to and let them off leash to explore nature.  Throw on your rain boots, grab some water and a clean towel because it is a little muddy right now but I can guarantee your pups will have a blast.

Clean up your yard

It may not feel like it now, but spring and summer are right around the corner so why not use this time to fix up your front and back yards!  Fix that leaning fence, build a shed, start the veggie garden of your dreams! You’ll be amazed at how much physical energy you expend walking around doing those things.

Play Wii sports

Ok so maybe this isn’t really a good way to stay active, but hey, it’s got the word sport in it right?  You can challenge your family or housemates to a tennis match, or even play around of golf, all without leaving your house or cracking a window!
