How To Best Prepare For Exams

There’s no doubt exams are the most stressful time of the year. There’s so much content to review and so little time to do so. But as a second-year student, I’ve developed some tips to help get you through this stressful time and do well on all your exams!

Review your notes

If you have time, this is the best thing to do. It’s not as bad as it sounds. You have already learned everything. By reviewing your notes, it’s just giving all that information stored in your brain a little reminder. You may be surprised how prepared you actually are after doing this! If you don’t have time to review them all, at least go through the summaries or big ideas.

Practice problems

It’s really important in all study areas to understand how to apply your knowledge. Quiz yourself, do textbook questions, go back and solve your lecture problems and most importantly, if you are given a review sheet, do that! Think about how you are going to be tested on your exam. If it’s multiple-choice, set up a practice exam and do that. Or quiz yourself with Q cards. If your test requires you to solve problems, practice those!

Ask questions

It’s okay if you forget how to do something or if there was something you never completely understood. Ask your classmates, your instructor, or your TA for extra help. There are also many supports that Ontario Tech offers. Book a session with a peer tutor, attend a workshop,  PASS sessions, or virtual study halls. Don’t let your questions go unanswered. There’s always someone happy to help.

Hopefully, I’ve shared some tips that will help you get through your exams. Of course, not one strategy will work for everyone, so it’s okay to try different techniques to see which works best for you.
