Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Why I love working for the Digital Community

August 23, 2022

Working as a Digital Community Assistant has been such a pleasure! Honestly, I sometimes feel like I am working for a mini Buzzfeed platform because this is the coolest job ever! There was a time when I wasn’t even aware such a position existed and now I must write to inform others because the Digital Community is an awesome outlet for expression, and I would greatly encourage getting involved!

Friendly Team

I love my team! They are the sweetest individuals and super understanding. I believe communication is important in facilitating the success of any organization. We do our best to voice our concerns, ideas, and opinions and work together to produce meaningful content.

Flexible Hours

As I stated above, the team is very understanding. You are provided with the privilege of working during hours that fit your schedule. You can divide up your hours throughout the week or pull a longer shift if you are comfortable in doing so!

Freedom

Got a burning idea that you must write down, voice record, or videotape? Well, Ontario Tech University has a platform for you to showcase that! Of the many ongoing projects, The Digital Community Podcast was founded this year and it includes many personable topics that students sit down to discuss. We have a blog, of course, to which anyone can contribute within various categories of Study, Student Experience, Opinion, Awareness, Career, Lifestyle, Wellness and more! So, you may write your heart out! We also get to create fun, interactive quizzes to find out what fruit you are or what kind of personality best fits you and more! There are various opportunities for photoshoots (not modelling) but rather for role modelling what it means to be a part of our amazing Ontario Tech University. You are the face of the student experience; hence we, as a domain of Student Life love representing you wherever possible!

No Bounds

There are no limits to your potential for creativity. If you have an idea, the Digital Community has a space for your voice. It’s funny because I am always thinking of fun, creative things to write about and I often get ideas in the middle of the night which of course, I jot down immediately and then comes another blog post! This job may or may not have been the reason behind me keeping a journal and pen close to my bed (shhh)!

Expression

You are working to voice your opinions. This job is asking you to create content that meets your heart's desires (and contributes meaningfully to the student experience in some way/shape/form)! How exciting is that? I love creating blog posts for mental health and fun, new trends whether it’s a book, a new recipe or an experience. I love that I am working towards something that I genuinely value. Work can seem like such a chore when you aren’t doing something you genuinely enjoy, hence, I am grateful to have received this opportunity to do something that I genuinely look forward to!

If my words may have piqued your interest, understand that you have the opportunity to try out for this and various other work-study positions offered by Ontario Tech University. Keep an eye out on the Student Life Portal as positions are posted throughout the year! If you wish to get involved in the Digital Community, you can consider becoming a Content Creator or Digital Community Crew Member. We look forward to connecting with you. All the best!
