Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Discord servers you may want to join

September 17, 2020

As I prepare for the Fall semester being online, an element of campus I know I’m going to miss is student clubs and societies. These organizations give us students a home where we can collectively obsess over our majors, hobbies and weird obsessions - or find new ones. We might not be on campus, but luckily through the power of the internet (and some dedicated students), the power of Clubs and community continue through Discord! These are great places to chat with members of our school community, even if you might not physically be seeing them anytime soon.

I asked student leaders to share their online communities with me, so without further ado, here’s a list of some cool communities you may want to join!

Networking

I’m personally a big fan of these guys, so I’m really happy they responded to our call for servers! They sum themselves up pretty well, so I’ll let their message to the talking

Message from the club

The Netsoc team invites all students to our Discord server where we talk about all things I.T. You'll learn about how to blow up processors and some life lessons to help you get through your time in university. Additionally, we'll be hosting all of our premier events plus new ones all virtually on Discord. Don't miss out, join up.

OTU Women in Engineering

Being in a STEM major myself, I observe on a near-daily basis how male-dominated our field is. While I’m not in engineering, I think it's safe to assume that they face similar challenges. That’s where Women in Engineering come in!

They wanted me to let you know that their Discord server and club itself isn’t exclusive to women in engineering, you can join regardless of your major or what you identify as!

Message from the club

Women in Engineering at OTU is a society aimed towards creating networking/professional development opportunities for both our members and allies. Not only this but we also like to hold social events to help facilitate a cohesive environment for all our members and everyone is welcomed! We really want to target allies as well to help create opportunities for them as well!

OTeaU

I personally think that this Club idea is phenomenal! I can’t wait to see how they work around an all-online semester to host incredible events. Whatever they do, I’m sure they have it in the bag (pun fully intended)

Message from the club

OTeaU a social tea club where people can hang out, bring games, and complete work while enjoying a nice cup of tea. We have a wide selection of teas to choose from and bring all the items needed for you to enjoy! We host events partnered with other clubs to bring our love of tea to them. You don't have to stick around either, you can grab a cup and go which is great if you have to get to class but want a cup of happiness before.

Connect with us on our Discord or on our social media on Instagram @OTeaU_ or Twitter @OTeau3

Pride Club

The executives of the Pride club are some of the most enthusiastic people I’ve ever met on a club leadership team. They care about what they do and are trying to make the campus a better place for everyone. With our physical campus shut down, the best way to join their community is through their Discord server!

Message from the club

Ontario Tech Pride Club is an open and inclusive club for all members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community at Ontario Tech University! We aim to bring students together to build a safer, positive environment on campus

Tabletop Club

The Tabletop Club runs a plethora of games and activities designed to call to the classic RPG fan in all of us! I usually think of DnD when I hear “Tabletop RPG”, but these guys have more than just that. The barrier to entry is low, so if you’ve never played an RPG before but are curious as to how they work - this is the place!

Message from the club

Our Discord server is filled with people who love tabletop RPGs and we've formed a strong community in a pretty short time and we only expect that to expand

Game Development

Anyone who knows me knows that I was going to throw this in here. I’m not apologizing, I’m just aware of my bias and accept it. I had to self-promo eventually, I’m the President!  Anyways, Game Development! It's cool, the people are cool, and our server is rad.

Message from the club

The Game Development Discord server is hosted by the executive members of the GDSA (Game Development Students Association). In it, students have the opportunity to talk with each other from all years about anything they’d like, and is often used as a space to share their work with each other in dedicated workshop channels. The GDSA is also hosting all our Fall events online through the Discord! This is a community you don’t want to miss out on!

I hope this list helps you find a digital home! Did I miss anything? Let me know and I can include it in a follow-up post!
