Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Summer: Expectations vs reality

July 26, 2021

I think it’s safe to say that summer takes the top pick as the best season for a large majority of people. With warm weather, sandy beaches, and endless plans ranging from barbeques, road trips, and vacations, I can admit summer is pretty great. However, I also think it goes without saying, at least in my eyes, that summer is not as perfect as everyone makes it out to be. Below, I will be discussing 3 summer expectations vs reality pet peeves of mine, that maybe you may relate to as well.

You expect to have endless plans, but let’s be real, other than maybe the vacation you may go on or a couple of picnics you attend, most of your time will be spent either at work, at home, or asleep. I can’t begin to list the number of plans cancelled as a result of being too tired or busy in the summer alone.

You expect the weather to be beautiful, but let’s be real, most days, it’s too hot, too humid, or too sunny to step foot outside the house. I will admit, I am tricked time and time again by the sun shining through my window and AC blasting in my home that the outside weather will reflect this rather cool atmosphere, but 90% of the time that is not the case.

You expect to have a never-ending stream of time to apply to your hobbies, yet you will most likely take this time to binge-watch your favourite Netflix shows, complete school work (if you have summer school), etc. The time seems to go by faster during the summer for some unknown reason, making the months pass by in the blink of an eye.

After reading this, you might think I am not a big fan of the summer season, but let me correct you, this is not the case. I’ve had some of my best memories, adventures, and get-togethers during summer so that could not be further from the truth. I love summer as much as the next person does, but admittedly, it’s not my favourite of the four seasons, which may or may not have inspired this article highlighting some of the reasons why.
