Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Minimalist vs. Maximalist: Which one are you?

July 13, 2022

To be a minimalist or a maximalist, that is the question. In recent years, I have noticed a prominent rise in minimalism with respect to home décor mainly, however other notable areas include fashion choices, hairstyles, nail art, packaging preferences, etc. Whether you are not sure if you have a ‘Less is more’ or ‘More is more’ philosophy, continue reading below and take the quiz to find out.

What is Minimalism?

The minimalism movement boosted to popularity in recent years highlighting simplified lifestyle aspects, primarily noted in home décor at its start, yet it extended far beyond this area. Although at the surface, minimalism seemed to reflect external aesthetic trends, the movement started to take on a different meaning. It began to relate to individuals living with intention in regards to their purchases, making a conscious choice to buy only what is needed, and not indulging in extra frills. Although I don’t consider myself a minimalist, I formed an appreciation for the ideology and have been in the process of adopting an intentional consumer mindset to curb my retail therapy addiction.

What is Maximalism?

Maximalism is a rather traditional approach to website design, home décor, product packaging, etc. Ditching the straightforward design approach, maximalism employs vibrant and outspoken design elements that can easily attract a viewer’s attention. As much as I appreciate a minimalistic approach, I do gear towards a maximalist approach for its complex yet daring outlook. I enjoy a mixture and variety of designs and colours tied to a specific theme which the maximalist approach never fails to offer.

Are you a Minimalist or a Maximalist?

Although the debate between the two sides is never-ending, let’s be real there is no right or wrong. As indecisive as I can be, I think many can agree both minimalist and maximalist approaches are able to offer something and neither one outshines the other. Now it’s time for what you’ve been waiting for – below is a list of 3 quizzes to find your aesthetic!
