Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Fun activities to do in the winter

February 11, 2022

Everyone has a different opinion on winter. Some love it and some hate it. As Canadians, we basically have winter for 5 months of the year. So here are some ways to make the most of that time:

Snow required:

Go sledding

This is an activity that is fun regardless of what age you are and doesn’t break the bank.

Go snowboarding, skiing, skating, or tubing

Toronto has many beautiful skating trails and places such as Brimacombe, Blue Mountain, or Nathan Phillips Square for many of these activities.

Build an igloo or a fort

Make it a competition with your friends. Then have a snowball fight! I love doing this with my siblings.

Build a snowman

Do you wanna build a snowmaaaan?

Make maple candy

Get yourself some syrup and a popsicle stick. Pour that syrup on the snow and roll!

Recipe

Go ice fishing

Be careful not to fall in the icy water!

Snow not required:

Drink hot chocolate… lots of it!

I personally like to make it myself with lots of marshmallows!

Go to Niagara Falls

This is one of my favourite places of all time and I could never get enough of it. I like to see the lights at night and by the Falls during the day.

Visit a Christmas Market

The Distillery Historic District is always a must.

Walk along a trail

Some trails I’ve been interested in checking out were the Oshawa Waterfront Trail and the Durham Regional Forest

Now is a great time to make s’mores and put that hot chocolate to good use.

Don’t let the cold stop you from having fun during winter. Wrap up in as many layers as needed (I won’t judge).
