8 throwback movies to watch this Halloween

By Hannah Bourke

The end of October means a couple things for students: the end of the short fall season, the middle of midterms, and a perfect time to schedule some time in between to relax and cuddle up on the couch to watch some Halloween movies to get you in the spirit. For those of you who aren’t into horror on your Halloween, I’ve compiled a list of some of the best throwback classics to watch this season. Get ready to feel nostalgic and don’t forget to grab your favourite candy too!

Hocus Pocus (1993)

A.K.A., the best Halloween movie ever made. You will never change my mind! For anyone who hasn’t seen this, it’s about the legend of the Sanderson Sisters who are resurrected by a teenage boy on Halloween night 300 years after their death. The story follows the sisters as they try to suck the souls of all of the children of Salem to become mortal before the sun rises. Stop what you’re doing and make sure you watch Hocus Pocus this Halloween season.

Halloweentown (1998)

We could never be too old for this throwback. I’ve probably watched this one over 50 times, and it never gets old! Brings me back to good days of Disney Channel. When you’re done this one, you’d better watch Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge, Halloweentown High, and Return to Halloweentown. You just have to!

Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

If you haven’t see this timeless classic, watch the OG first. The 2016 remake is also worth a watch if you’re into sequels.

Corpse Bride (2005)

Tim Burton films are definitely a classic when it comes to Halloween. I remember loving this one as a kid. It’s quirky, imaginative, and incorporates some music throughout which is always cool to watch!

Monster House (2006)

I won’t lie to you when I tell you how scared I was of this one as a kid. A classic to watch every season!

Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire (2000)

Now this is a throwback. How many times did this play on Family Channel every Friday night in October as a kid? Who else was sitting on the edge of their seat when no adults would believe the kids?!

Beetle Juice (1998)

It’s truly not Halloween until you watch this classic. Another Tim Burton masterpiece that never gets old! If you haven’t seen this, you need to. Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!

The Haunted Mansion (2003)

I think this movie TERRIFIED me when I was little, maybe even more than Monster House. Let me just list a few things: the butler, the lady in the glass globe, the moving furniture, the scary gates… hello nightmares! These days, this would definitely make my list of Halloween classics.

I hope you’ll find some time in your busy schedule to watch at least one of these classics. What do you think I should add to my list? Let me know what spooky movies you like to watch at Halloween time in the comments! Happy Halloween!
